Christie & Co has been instructed to sell the former Retreat Care Home in Plymouth, Devon, which has potential to provide specialist care services.

This property, which formerly traded as a care home registered for up to 20 residents, ceased trading in October 2025.

It comprises a 21-bedroom, Grade II-listed building, believed to have been built as a Dower House in the mid-1700s.

It is situated in the quiet Belle Vue Road, in the Hooe area of Plymouth, with good road access and an open outlook.

Externally, it has well-established gardens, car parking for several vehicles, and a former stable block which could be converted into residential dwellings with the right permissions.

Simon Harvey, senior director for care at Christie & Co, who is handling the sale, said: “The Retreat is an attractive proposition thanks to its generous size, flexible layout, and excellent location.

“It offers strong potential for a range of uses, from care-related services such as specialist or independent living to alternative sectors or redevelopment opportunities, subject to the necessary planning permissions.

“This is a rare opportunity to acquire a building of real character and versatility.

“Having operated as a care home for many years before closing last year, it is now available with immediate vacant possession and is well‑placed for a variety of future uses, subject to appropriate consents.”

The former Retreat Care Home is on the market with an asking price of £975,000.
